Holy Curse (PARIS) + Les Viperes (QUEBEC)
@ the Darwin Bar, Morlaix, France
Friday, June 8, 2001

Nights like these don't come around too often so there was nothing that was going to stop me seeing the gig.

The Darwin Bar (named after the ex-owner went on holiday to Australia) is located right in the centre of Morlaix - and being an Aussie living here you can imagine it's my local.

The current owner has been completely converted by me and a few other guys with his CD player being stacked up with everything from the Oz-Detroit rock style.

I ended up arriving early to catch the soundcheck and I must say it was impressive. Dinner and a few beers later I was well prepared for a rockin' good night.

First up the Vipers from Quebec. More on the punk rock side of things, these young lads certainly warmed up the place. The four-piece line-up is great with everyone participating in the singing duties. I enjoyed them and most other people did too. I think this group shall certainly progress if they stay together in the coming years.

Now onto the headliner Holy Curse.

Purely and simply, this was a great night for anyone who likes a top rock 'n' roll band. Their originals cook and I spent most of the time up the front jumping around and screaming.

Unfortunately, Pascal blew up his guitar amp about five songs into the show, so a replacment had to be found. Luckily one was, but the public lost 20 minutes of the show. Not the group's fault at all but just one of those things that happen.

Anyway with amps back on track away they went again. Musically, the guys rock and with Eric, their frontman, showing great presence. I saw them play with Deniz Tek on his last solo tour and must say they just get better and better.

They rocketed through about 15 originals before the call for a certain Birdman Bowen came and I finished off "Cryin' Sun" and "New Rac"e with the band and I loved it.

Holy Curse have released two CDs and if you don't have them just e-mail for info on how to get copies. The albums are awesome.

Great guys, great band and just a great night. - Birdman Bowen
