HAWAIIAN DISEASE - Abbe May And The Rockin Pneumonia (MGM)
Mainstream media praise is deservedly flowing for Abbe May's EP taster for the forthcoming album but, curiously in these cloistered times, each review has been identically focussed on the not-so-covert sexual entendres in the title track. Come on boys, you've never heard a song about splitting the whisker before?
Luckily for West Australian-reared Abbe, she has the pipes to carry off this raunchy blues thing. I'd group her with Lizzy Ray from 72Blues as best-in-class in Australia. Abbe's early stuff with The Fuzz was attention-grabbing and although I never heard her last solo effort I'Il bet it also measured up.
But this is about the present (and future) and Abbe and her Rockin Pneumonia certainly have a bright one. They play bluesy rock drenched in saturated six-string chordage. With a brother (KT Rumble) in tow and being adept on the guitar herself, Abbe and her Pneumonia cook up a stew that's as chunky as your granny's soup and probably twice as palatable.
"Do You Wanna Go Dancin'?" stretches over seven-and-a-half minutes and while the song itself is fairly rote 12-bar, it's adorned by some scorching guitar and that great voice. If you think it wears out its welcome, there's an economy sized "70s Porn Radio Mix" running to four minutes that'll keep you content.
The drum machine-adorned "Carolina Honeyrider" smells like a downtime studio clown-around before it peters out, but that's fine in the context of this being a shakedown before the long-player. "We Had A Real Good Time Together" is the most fully-realised song on the platter and again shows off the May vocal capabilities to fairly devastating effect.
There is the sense that this EP is a holding tactic, to keep the band front-of-mind while they prepare for bigger things, and in the sense that the record's a lot of fun and builds the anticipation, it goes down just fine (oral sex pun intended.) - The Barman
