3. The Southern River Band - DIY:
I've been following this band since 2016 and it's amazing to see how far they have come, (only just recently blowing up overseas.) As their name suggests, they are from Southern River in Perth. This album is like Rose Tattoo meets Thin Lizzy with a hint of Judas Priest. It's no bullshit heavy rock, fantastic live band, some great songs on here !
Fav Track: Second Best
4. DEDPAN - (Self Titled)
DEDPAN are a local band from Inner West Sydney. They play fast, in your face hardcore punk and it’s awesome ! This album was produced by Mo Mayhem who produces our records and he did a fantastic job with it ! It’s raw and exciting and Ben’s drum parts are particularly mind blowing ! A really cool feature of this album is that all the songs flow into the next, it’s like being at a live show ! The album ever begins and finishes with crowd noise, love it !
Fav Song: NO PLACE
5. Redd Kross - (Self Titled)
A new Redd Kross album in 2024!? FUCK YES ! I love this band and this new double album is fantastic ! Some tracks sound like they could have been long lost Beatles songs from the late ‘60s! There’s glamtastic ballads on here as well as sleazy rockers and hints of KISS and psych pop, it’s got it all !
Fav Track: Candy Coloured Catastrophe
6. Pocketwatch - Break Out (EP)
This may be my favourite up and coming band in Sydney. Their sound is somewhere between alt/grunge rock and power pop. They blend the genres nicely and the result is an exciting and spirited handful of songs. The last track is particularly interesting; a beautiful ballad with a string arrangement that reminds me of a classic, timeless Oasis track. This band are destined for greatness, check em’ out immediately !
Fav Track: Drown
7. Butterknife - lilith
I met this talented group of young women through a family friend in Newcastle. When I first listened to this album (whilst driving on a highway), I was blown away ! Not only are the songs well written, but they produced the album themselves and it sounds world class ! I would describe their sound as dark pop; it’s moody and mysterious with lots of cool synth sounds and a drummer who really shines on the more upbeat tracks. Also, the two singers in the band have amazing voices!
Fav Track: deathwish
8. Wesley Fuller - All Fuller No Filler
I’m proud to say that Wes is a friend of mine. This is his second album and it’s a beauty ! It’s ‘60s-inspired power-pop with hints of The Who, The Beach Boys and of course, The Beatles. The craftsmanship of Wesley’s songwriting is amazing, there isn’t a boring moment on this record and the instrumentation is so lush with organs, 12-string guitars and all the percussion you want to hear, AND he plays it all himself ! (Hence the cheeky album title)
Fav Track: The Velvet Affair
9. Billy Tibbals - Nightlife Stories (EP):
I love this bloke ! I think he’s British but lives in LA. This EP sounds like Sparks meets T.Rex with a little Supergrass. Glam-Pop-rock, super exciting and fun, everything I want in a band ! I believe his drummer also plays in The Lemon Twigs, love the little wink and nod to Silverhead’s “Hello New York” at the start of this EP !
Fav Track: The World Revolves
10. SPEED - ONLY ONE MODE:
I’m late to the party with this amazing Sydney band… I missed seeing them open for Turnstile at the Enmore Theatre and I’m really regretting it as I’m loving this new album ! Aus Hardcore at its finest with a few left turns including some flute thrown in? Badass !
Fav Track: THE FIRST TEST
