10. Hall and Oates- “Timeless Classics” (compilation)
Where should we start? The Dune Rats? Violent Soho? Clowns? No, lets just skip the popular upper-middle class bro-rock of 2017 and go straight to the heart of rock n roll. Re-packaged compilations that come out just in time for Christmas $10 bins. 


If you are looking for a starting point for your Hall and Oates collection, this may as well be it. “Maneater” “You Make My dreams” “Rich Girl”.. they are all here, plus deeper cuts such as “She’s Gone” and “Sara Smile”. A must for fans of Philly Grindcore.



9. The Afghan Whigs- In Spades (album)
I nearly forgot about this one. One of the rare cases of a band that goes away for a long time then somehow comes back better than they used to be. I would describe this album as "sad, yet gangsta AF" The internet says that this album has "generally favourble reviews" and I tend to agree with that also.

 

How many rock and roll tours have you heard about where the people booking the run are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts for a band they’ve never met? That’s the unlikely scenario behind the Australian East Coast visit by Perth’s The Bible Bashers.

Brisbane’s endearing gutter punks HITS andJames Doyle from Raygun Mortlock are the benevolent bookers getting right behind The Bible Bashers' tour starting in Queensland tonight. 

HITS and The Bible Bashers will meet for the first time at Stones Corner Hotel In Brisbane ,and the pairing will continue all weekend with shows at Curummbin Creek Tavern on the Gold Coast (Saturday) and Condong Bowls Club in NSW (Sunday). 

Gigs in Newcastle and Sydney follow with a finale at The Record Crate in Sydney on October 1.

Salt Mine – Raygun Mortlock (self released)

There’s a lot to be said for bands that exude an aura of dysfunction. They’re way more interesting than manufactured corporate whores or prissy private school prats whose parents bought their instruments.

Raygun Mortlock recorded this EP in Melbourne a couple of years ago and promptly forgot about it. The band didn’t exist for five years before that. Before COVID, they didn’t play much outside its home of Far Northern New South Wales with Brisbane being the extent of their touring ambitions.

The band’s recorded output is skinny but don’t let that put you off. This is primo noise rock that recalls likes of the Jesus Lizard, TAD and a host of other contenders from 20 years ago.

After a weird couple of years and having to shelve my label for family reasons and a pandemic, you could say I’ve dropped out of music to a certain degree. Anyways I do have a Top Ten.Some are releases, some arte new bands and some are life choices. Onward, upward and ideas flowing for the label and a possible live venue. In no particular order:

Belle Phoenix - “The Glorious Dead”
One release that got affected by my situation. Thankfully Beast and Spooky released this absolute gem. Belle was living in Brisbane a few years ago when my friend Mary Mihelakos contacted me, saying I should talk to Belle. I did, we met up, listened to the recordings she did a few years ago and put my head down to help her as much as I could behind the scenes. I was planning on releasing the album but family issues and then COVID put my label at a standstill. I’ve been listening to it for a few years now and haven’t stop listening to it.
