This is an interesting, intriguing release for two reasons. First, it's only available in hard form as a fucking cassette, for fuck's sake. Second, if a three-synth arsenal doesn't faze you, you're going to be seriously interested.

Just a few bars into "Listen Closelier" it's evident that The Frowning Clouds are so far out of step with what passes for popular culture that they're in danger of being deported to a musical Antarctica. This is music that existed long before pitch adjusters, vocoders and dry machines, so if they had to live in exile you could safely bet that, food and water apart, the only other thing close to the top of The Frowning Clouds' list of essentials would be amplifier valves.

Nonchalant. That’s the word that describes the second album by Geelong’s Frowning Clouds to a tee. You don’t hear it used much these days – and you don’t hear music like The Frowning Clouds much either.

Once upon a time, "Thee" was a prefix designating a pointy shoe-wearing band from the garage that only wanted to party like it was 1966. That it's 2014 and it's being worn by a bunch of hardcore punks Sardinia who have toured of China, South Korea and Japan (on a label from Reno, the Casino Capital of Nevada, USA,) is truly an indication that you can stick your preconceptions where the sun doesn't shine. These days the underground music world is spinning on a different axis.

Plenty of bands put out compilations of their A sides. Trust Danish psych-soul-rock kings Baby Woodrose to turn the practice on its head and issue one exclusively of B sides, but it should be no shock as they’ve been carving their own swathe since the 2001.

Glad you asked. It's sharp and urgent rock ’n’ roll played by four old heads from Central Scotland who sound like they mean it. If Cheap Trick wore kilts, ate haggis and were hard to understand after 10 pints they’d be The Media Whores.
