The label doesn't lie. "Todo Roto" ("All Broken") is the third long player for Wau y Los Arrrghs and the description of "1966 punk style from an Iberian garage" - writ in capital letters, just in case you don't get the message - is accurate. If you like your fuzz raw and unbridled, look no further.
Manic they may be but Wau y Los Arrrghs also know how, and when, to temper their attack. "No Me Veras Caer" overlays some deftly clean guitar over surging organ and the obligatory fuzztone, while "Rescate Griego" sounds like Morriconne disappearing down the rabbit hole while surfing. Guitarist Molongui knows her way around a fretboard.
In case you're wondering, every song is sung in the band's mother tongue (that'd be Spanish) which is only a problem if you can't speak it. Even then you'd have to be mad to let that stand in the way of playing it. Speaking of unhinged, madman vocalist Juanito Wau conveys more in one frenzied verse than a dozen foreign language phrasebooks do over a couple of hundred pages.
A dozen songs pepper "Todo Roto", four off them covers including two Kinks obscurities. There really isn't a dull moment and it's all driven by a brutally effective engine room. Bassist Saju especially covers all the bases (ouch) with fluid runs.
If Spain truly is one of the last remaining vestiges for rock and roll in spite of their economy being in the toilet, Wau y Arrrghs prove that all is not actually broken. Recommended with more than a small degree of enthusiasm.
